Japan by month

Japan in October

One of the best months: comfortable days (Tokyo around 22°C), autumn colour in Hokkaido, Tohoku and the mountains, and big festivals in Takayama and Kyoto. Typhoon risk fades through the month.

What October is like

October brings Japan's most comfortable weather on the main islands: Tokyo averages 22.0°C by day and 14.8°C at night, Osaka 23.7°C and 16.0°C. Early October can still bring typhoon rain, but the second half is usually dry and clear.

The north turns cold quickly. Sapporo averages 16.4°C by day and 8°C at night, and the first snow often dusts the high peaks.

Where to go in October

Autumn colour moves down from the mountains. Early to mid-October is peak time around Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, the Hakkoda mountains and Oirase Gorge in Aomori, and the alpine areas of Nagano and Gifu. In the cities, maples turn red around 23 October in Asahikawa and 28 October in Sapporo.

Takayama's autumn festival on 9–10 October parades its own set of ornate floats, different from the spring ones, and Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri on 22 October recreates 1,000 years of costume history.

Sports Day long weekend

Sports Day, a national holiday on the second Monday of October, gives Japan a three-day weekend, so hotels and popular autumn spots fill up. Book ahead if your dates include it.

A mid-October trip to Tohoku or Hokkaido catches the autumn colour at its peak, while Tokyo and Kyoto are still green and pleasant.
