Tokyo's climate at a glance
Tokyo's winters are dry and bright. January highs average 9.8°C and nights fall to about 1°C, but snow settles on only a few days a year. Spring warms quickly from late March.
The rainy season usually runs from about 7 June to 19 July. After it ends, July and August are hot and humid, with highs of 30–31°C and warm nights around 23°C. September and October are the wettest months because of typhoons and autumn rain fronts, then November turns crisp and clear.
Best time to visit Tokyo
Late March to early April for cherry blossoms (average flowering 24 March, full bloom around 31 March). Late November to early December for ginkgo and maple colour. November, December and January give the most reliable blue skies and a clear chance to see Mount Fuji from the city.
Tips
- Clear plastic umbrellas sell for about 500 yen at any convenience store, so there is no need to pack one.
- In summer, carry water and take breaks in air-conditioned stations and malls. Trains and shops are cold inside, so bring a thin layer.
- Winter is dry. Lip balm and moisturiser help, and hotel rooms often have humidifiers you can ask for.
