Asahikawa's climate at a glance
Asahikawa sits in a basin in central Hokkaido, away from the sea, so it swings further between seasons than Sapporo. January and February lows average around −12°C, and on clear, still nights it can fall below −20°C. The −41.0°C recorded here on 25 January 1902 is still Japan's official lowest temperature.
That inland position also makes summer surprisingly warm: average highs reach 26–27°C in July and August. Snowfall is heavy, about 5.6 m a season, but the snow is dry and powdery.
Best time to visit Asahikawa
Winter (December to February) is the season for powder snow, diamond dust on very cold mornings and the Asahikawa Winter Festival in early February. From June to August, the city is the gateway to the flower fields of Biei and Furano and to hiking in Daisetsuzan, where autumn colour starts as early as mid-September.
Tips
- On the coldest mornings, phone batteries drain fast. Keep your phone in an inside pocket and carry a small power bank.
- Wear proper winter boots rather than sneakers: snow here is dry and deep, and sidewalks can be icy.
- Mountain weather in Daisetsuzan changes fast even in summer. Take a warm layer and rain jacket on any hike.
