Nagoya's climate at a glance

Winters are sunny and dry, with January highs around 9°C, though the cold 'Ibuki-oroshi' wind from the mountains makes it feel colder than Tokyo. Snow settles only occasionally.

Summer is the challenge: after the rainy season (about 6 June to 19 July), August averages 33.2°C with warm, humid nights near 25°C. September is the wettest month.

Best time to visit Nagoya

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms at Nagoya Castle and Tsuruma Park. October and November for comfortable weather and autumn colour at Korankei, which peaks in mid to late November. Nagoya is also the gateway to Takayama and Shirakawa-go, which are much colder and snowier in winter.

Tips

  • In July and August, plan the castle and outdoor sights for the morning and spend the afternoon in museums or underground malls.
  • Winter wind can be biting. A windproof jacket helps more than a thick sweater.
  • Heading to Takayama or Shirakawa-go in winter? Expect snow and temperatures well below Nagoya's.
