Questions travellers ask

How do I get to Takayama and Shirakawa-go?

Nagoya is the gateway: the JR Takayama Line runs to Gifu City in about 20 minutes, then on through Gero to Takayama. Buses link Takayama with Shirakawa-go and the hot spring towns of Hida. Chubu Centrair airport near Nagoya has international flights.

What is Gifu known for?

The thatched-roof farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and especially beautiful under snow; Takayama's old town and its spring and autumn festivals; Gero Onsen, one of Japan's most famous hot springs; cormorant fishing on the Nagara River in summer; and the knife makers of Seki.

What should I eat in Gifu?

Hida beef, richly marbled and tender enough to pull apart with chopsticks. In summer, try ayu sweetfish grilled with salt, and in Hida, keichan, chicken stir-fried with cabbage.
