Nagano's climate at a glance

Nagano city sits in a basin surrounded by the Japanese Alps. It is one of the driest cities in Japan, with under 1,000 mm of rain a year, and its inland position brings big temperature swings: in January highs reach about 4°C while lows drop to −4°C.

The city gets around 1.6 m of snow a season, while the ski areas of Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen get many metres. Summer days reach 30–31°C, but nights are cooler than in Tokyo.

Best time to visit Nagano

December to March for skiing and for the Jigokudani snow monkeys, which bathe in the hot spring most often on the coldest days of January and February. Cherry blossoms open around 11 April. Autumn colour in the mountains peaks in October, reaching the city in early November.

Tips

  • Mornings are cold even when afternoons are warm. Dress in layers in spring and autumn.
  • The path to the snow monkeys is a 30-minute walk on packed snow in winter. Wear boots with grip or rent spikes at the trailhead.
  • Mountain resorts like Hakuba can be 5–10°C colder than Nagano city. Check the forecast for the resort itself.
