Japan Heritage stories

Local history told as a route you can follow, with the places that go with it.

Good to know

  • Pick a hotel near a JR Yamanote Line station to reach most districts easily.
  • Get an IC card such as Suica or PASMO for trains, buses and convenience stores.
  • Tokyo also includes island areas such as the Izu and Ogasawara islands, reached by boat.

Questions travellers ask

Which airport should I fly into for Tokyo?

Tokyo has two: Haneda, close to the city, and Narita, in neighboring Chiba. Both have direct flights from the US and Europe. From Haneda, take the monorail, trains or buses into town; from Narita, the Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner, or limousine buses.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

Spring brings plum and then cherry blossoms, with picnics in Shinjuku Gyoen, Ueno and Yoyogi parks. Summers are hot and humid with typhoons, but have the Sumida River fireworks. Autumn is cool and fresh, and winters are cold and dry with city illuminations and New Year visits to Sensoji and Meiji Jingu.

What food is Tokyo known for?

Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city, and hundreds of cheap ramen shops. Local specialties include Edo-style nigiri sushi, monjayaki, a runnier cousin of okonomiyaki popular in Tsukishima, and fukagawa-meshi, clams and leeks in miso broth over rice.
