Japan Heritage stories

Local history told as a route you can follow, with the places that go with it.

Good to know

  • The Tokaido Shinkansen crosses Shizuoka, with Mount Fuji visible on the right side heading west on clear days.
  • Izu has many hot spring towns and beaches within reach of Tokyo.
  • Shizuoka grows a large share of Japan's green tea.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get to Shizuoka from Tokyo?

The Tokaido Shinkansen reaches the hot spring resort of Atami or Shizuoka Station in an hour or less, and the Japan Rail Pass covers it. Local trains and highway buses take about three hours. Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport has domestic and some international flights.

What is there to do in Shizuoka?

See Mt. Fuji over the tea fields of the Nihondaira plateau, swim at the white-sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula, and soak in the hot spring resorts of Atami and Ito. Mt. Fuji's climbing season opens in July, and winter brings the clearest views of the snow-capped peak.

What should I eat in Shizuoka?

Green tea first: Shizuoka is Japan's top tea producer. Try charcoal-grilled eel around Lake Hamana, famous for eel farming, and wasabi, which originated here; wasabi-zuke pickles go well with rice.
