Amami's climate at a glance
Amami Oshima, halfway between Kyushu and Okinawa, is subtropical. Winter highs stay around 18°C, but the season is often cloudy and windy. It is also a wet island, with over 2,900 mm of rain a year.
The rainy season starts early, on average from about 12 May to 29 June, and June is the wettest month (about 430 mm). July and August are hot at around 32°C, and typhoons are most likely from August to October.
Best time to visit Amami
July, after the rainy season and before peak typhoon season, is the classic beach month. Late January brings early cherry blossoms (hikanzakura, average flowering 20 January). Spring and autumn are good for the island's subtropical forest, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.

- Winter sea breezes make 18°C feel cooler. Bring a windproof jacket.
- Sunlight is intense even on cloudy days. Use strong sunscreen and reef-safe products when snorkelling.
