Japan Heritage stories

Local history told as a route you can follow, with the places that go with it.

Good to know

  • Hakone has a round route of train, cable car, ropeway and lake boat.
  • Yokohama's Chinatown is one of the largest in Japan.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get to Yokohama, Kamakura and Hakone?

From Tokyo, local JR trains reach Yokohama in about 30 minutes and Kamakura about 30 minutes after that. For Hakone, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Odawara and change to the Hakone Tozan Railway. Coming from Kyoto, Osaka or Nagoya by Shinkansen, get off at Shin-Yokohama. Haneda Airport is about 30 minutes from Yokohama Station.

What is there to do in Kanagawa?

See Yokohama's waterfront skyline and Chinatown, the Great Buddha and Zen temples of Kamakura, and Hakone's hot springs, ropeway, museums and Lake Ashi with views of Mt. Fuji on clear winter days. In summer, Enoshima and the Shonan beaches are popular for swimming and marine sports.

What should I eat in Kanagawa?

Shonan shirasu, tiny whitebait eaten raw or boiled on rice; tuna bowls in Misaki; sanma-men noodles with stir-fried vegetables from Yokohama's Chinatown; and Odawara kamaboko fish cake.
