  • Grilled beef tongue (gyutan) is Sendai's signature dish.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get to Miyagi?

Sendai, the capital, is about an hour and a half from Tokyo on the fastest Tohoku Shinkansen trains (Hayabusa, Komachi or Hayate); the slower Yamabiko takes about two hours. Sendai Airport has flights from Osaka, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa and other cities.

What is there to do in Miyagi?

See the island-dotted Matsushima Bay, one of Japan's most famous views, and Zuihoden, the mausoleum of the warlord Date Masamune in Sendai. In early August the Sendai Tanabata festival draws more than two million people. In winter, the trees on Zao turn into snow monsters.

What should I eat in Miyagi?

Gyutan, grilled beef tongue, is Sendai's signature dish. For something sweet, try zunda mochi, rice cake topped with sweet edamame paste. Shiroishi umen, short thin noodles, and kamaboko fish cakes are other local favourites.
