Aomori's climate at a glance

Cold winds from the Sea of Japan bring Aomori an average of about 5.7 m of snow between November and April, more than almost any other city of its size. January is the snowiest month (1.95 m), with highs around 2°C.

Summers are warm and fairly comfortable: August averages 27.8°C at the top and 20°C at night. Rain is spread evenly through the year.

Best time to visit Aomori

In January and February, the trees on the Hakkoda mountains freeze into 'snow monsters' (juhyo), and the onsen inns around them are at their most atmospheric. Cherry blossoms reach Hirosaki in late April. Early August brings the Aomori Nebuta Festival (2–7 August), the city's busiest week. Late October is peak autumn colour at Oirase Gorge and Hakkoda.

Tips

  • Book Nebuta week hotels months ahead, or stay in Hirosaki or Hachinohe and travel in.
  • Snow-covered roads to Hakkoda and Oirase can close in winter. Check bus and ropeway status the day before.
  • Waterproof boots matter more than a heavy coat for walking around the city in winter slush.
