Takamatsu's climate at a glance

Takamatsu has the classic Seto Inland Sea climate: mountains in Chugoku and Shikoku block both winter snow clouds and summer typhoon rain, so it gets only about 1,150 mm of rain a year. Winters are sunny, with January highs around 10°C and almost no snow.

Summers are hot, around 32–33°C in July and August. Low rainfall means the area has a long history of water shortages, which is why the plains are dotted with irrigation ponds.

Best time to visit Takamatsu

Spring (late March to May) and autumn (October to November) are ideal for ferries to Naoshima, Teshima and the other art islands. Cherry blossoms open around 27 March, including at Ritsurin Garden and Tamamo Park. Summer is fine for the islands but very sunny, with little shade.

Tips

  • On the islands, shade is scarce. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water from May to September.
  • Ferries can be cancelled in strong winds. Check the operator's status on the morning of your trip.
  • Many island museums close one day a week, usually Monday. Check before you plan around the weather.
