Best time to visit Sendai

Cherry blossoms open around 8 April. Sendai Tanabata (6–8 August) fills the shopping arcades with paper streamers. Autumn colour at Naruko Gorge and Akiu peaks in early November, and the Pageant of Starlight illuminates Jozenji-dori in December.

Tips

  • Sendai is a good base for snowier places: Zao's snow monsters and onsen are about an hour away by bus.
  • The Tanabata arcades are covered, so they work even on rainy days.
  • Late spring mornings can be cool. Bring a light jacket in May and June.
