  • The Naruto whirlpools are strongest around spring tides; check the daily tide table.
  • The Iya Valley is remote and best explored by car or on a tour.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get to Tokushima?

Highway buses from Shin-Kobe or Osaka cross Awaji Island to Tokushima. From Takamatsu, take the JR Uzushio limited express; from Matsuyama, limited express trains also run. Tokushima Airport has domestic flights, and ferries sail from Wakayama.

When is the Awa Odori festival?

Every August during the Obon holidays, when huge crowds come to Tokushima City to watch and join the dancing. Book accommodation early. Other seasons are good too: rafting from spring, surfing in summer, and autumn colors in the Iya Valley and Oboke Gorge in November.

What should I eat in Tokushima?

Naruto kintoki sweet potatoes, handmade thick somen, and sudachi, a sour little citrus squeezed over grilled fish and hot pots. Indigo dyeing, called Japan blue, is the local craft to see.
