Ishigaki's climate at a glance
Ishigaki, in the Yaeyama Islands near Taiwan, is the warmest of Japan's 22 forecast cities. Even in January highs average 21.5°C and nights stay around 17°C. Winter is often cloudy and breezy, though.
The rainy season starts in early May and ends in late June. Summers are hot, with highs around 32°C and nights near 27°C. Typhoons pass close to the islands most years, most often from July to September.
Best time to visit Ishigaki
Late June to July has the calmest seas and clearest water for Kabira Bay, Taketomi and the manta ray dive sites. October and November are still warm with fewer crowds. Winter suits sightseeing and island-hopping more than beach days.
Tips
- Ferries to Taketomi, Iriomote and the other islands stop in high winds. Leave a buffer day before your flight home.
- Swimming is not allowed in most of Kabira Bay because of strong currents and boat traffic. Swim at beaches with lifeguards and nets, or join a guided snorkel tour.
- Box jellyfish appear in summer. Swim at netted beaches and wear a rash guard.
