Japan by month
Japan in June
Rainy season on the mainland from about 6–7 June: warm (Tokyo around 26°C), humid and often drizzly, but green and quiet. Hokkaido has no rainy season and is at its freshest.
What June is like
The rainy season (tsuyu) usually begins around 4 June in northern Kyushu, 6 June in Osaka and Nagoya, and 7 June in Tokyo. It means frequent drizzle and grey skies rather than all-day storms, with warm, humid days: Tokyo averages 26.1°C by day and 18.5°C at night.
Hokkaido has no proper rainy season, and Sapporo's June (21.8°C by day) is one of its best months. Okinawa's rains end around 21 June, after which the beach season starts in earnest.
Where to go in June
Rain suits Japan's hydrangeas: temples in Kamakura and the mountain railway at Hakone are lined with them in mid to late June. Moss gardens in Kyoto look their greenest.
Hokkaido is the best escape from the rain, with clear days, the Yosakoi Soran dance festival in Sapporo in early June and the first lavender at Furano by the end of the month.
Is June worth it?
Yes, if you plan around the weather. June has no Japanese national holidays, so trains and hotels are quieter and cheaper than in spring or summer. Mix indoor sights (museums, depachika food halls, aquariums) with outdoor ones on drier days.
Rain on the mainland can be heavy in late June and early July, especially in Kyushu, Hiroshima and Shikoku. Check heavy-rain warnings if you plan mountain or river trips.

Tips
- Buy a clear umbrella at any convenience store (about 500 yen) and wear quick-drying shoes.
- Humidity is high, like a muggy summer in the US South. Breathable clothes are better than heavy rain gear.
- June is a great month to combine with Hokkaido, which stays drier and cooler.
