Mild: long sleeves or a light cardigan. Bring a thin jacket for the evening.

• The Mount Hakodate ropeway gets very busy at sunset. Go up 30 minutes early or wait for the second wave after dark.
• Goryokaku Tower next to the fort is the only place to see its star shape from above.
• Hakodate is about four hours from Sapporo by limited express train, or one hour from Shin-Aomori area by Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
