Small and rich
Jutaro is a type of unshu mikan, Japan's easy-peel mandarin. Nishiura mikan Jutaro is a little smaller than the common Aoshima mikan, with thinner skin that sits tight on the fruit. It has more sugar and more acid, so the flavour is deep and well balanced.
Facing Mt Fuji
It grows in the Sanura district of Numazu city, Shizuoka: Shizuura, Uchiura and Nishiura. The orchards sit mostly on north-facing slopes with Mt Fuji across Suruga Bay. The fertile volcanic soil drains and breathes well, which suits the Jutaro tree, a weak grower.
Stored to perfection
Growers here have stored mikan for generations, and they have the skill to keep the fruit in top condition after harvest.
Good to know
- The Nishiura coast has some of the classic views of Mt Fuji across the sea. It is a scenic drive from Numazu.
- Numazu Port is known for fresh seafood and is easy to add to the trip.
