A brackish lake

Lake Shinji, beside Matsue in Shimane, is a brackish lake with about one tenth the salt of seawater. Rivers carry in nutrients, so plankton, the clams' food, is plentiful. It is ideal water for Yamato shijimi.

Matsue's own clam

In the Edo era, Lake Shinji shijimi were the official clams of the Matsue domain, and they were also everyday food. The lake became Japan's top shijimi catch in 1981, and households in Matsue buy more shijimi than anywhere else in Japan, top of the national ranking for 14 years running as of 2024.

How to eat it

The clams are large and meaty, rich in minerals and amino acids. Try shijimi-jiru, a clam miso soup, or a clear soup. Locals say it is good the morning after drinking.

Good to know

  • Watch the sunset over Lake Shinji from Matsue, then order shijimi soup for dinner.
  • Compare with Jusanko Yamato Shijimi from Aomori in the far north.
