Kamakura

Komachi-dori runs from the east exit of Kamakura Station towards Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, parallel to the wide Wakamiya-ōji avenue. It is lined with snack stalls, sweet shops, cafes and souvenir shops, and on weekends it is one of the busiest streets in Kamakura.

At the top is Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, founded in 1063 and the most important Shinto shrine in the city. Its grounds hold ponds, a long staircase up to the main hall and the Kamakura Museum of National Treasures. Quieter temples such as Hōkai-ji are a short walk east. More of the city is in our Kamakura guide.

Questions

How far is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu from Kamakura Station?

About ten minutes on foot from the east exit, either along Komachi-dori or along the main Wakamiya-ōji avenue.

Can I visit Komachi-dori and the Great Buddha on the same day?

Yes. The Great Buddha is in the Hase area, a few stops away on the Enoden line, so many people do both in one day.
