Sakae is the heart of Nagoya and, with the Nagoya Station area, one of its two main commercial districts. Department stores, underground malls and theatres sit around Sakae Station, where the Higashiyama and Meijo subway lines meet.
Hisaya-odori Park runs through the middle, with the 180-metre TV tower built in 1954, often called a symbol of Nagoya. Next door, Oasis 21 has a glass roof you can walk on. Try local dishes like miso katsu and hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice) here. More of the ward is in our Naka, Nagoya guide.

Questions
Sakae or Nagoya Station: where should I stay?
Nagoya Station is better if you take the shinkansen or day trips. Sakae is better for food, shopping and evenings out. They are five minutes apart on the Higashiyama line.
