Naka Ward, Hiroshima

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park opened in 1954 in the centre of the city, on ground that was a busy district before the atomic bomb of 6 August 1945. It was planned and designed by the architect Kenzō Tange, with the museum, the cenotaph and the ruined dome lined up on one axis.

Across the river is the A-Bomb Dome, once an exhibition hall and the building closest to the hypocenter that remained at least partly standing. It has been kept as it was. Give the Peace Memorial Museum time, then walk past the Children's Peace Monument and its paper cranes. More of the ward is in our Naka ward guide.
