Tenjin is the centre of Fukuoka and the largest shopping and entertainment district in Kyushu, with department stores, fashion buildings, City Hall and offices. Under Watanabe-dori, the main street, the Tenjin Chikagai underground mall links the shops to the subway stations.
In the evening, yatai food carts set up along the streets, serving ramen, yakitori and drinks at a few stools each. Fukuoka is the city where these stalls are still common. The trendy Daimyo side streets are just west. See our Chuo, Fukuoka guide for more of the ward.

Questions
Tenjin or Hakata: where should I stay?
Hakata is best for shinkansen trips. Tenjin is better for shopping, food and nightlife, and is only five minutes by subway from Hakata Station.
When are the yatai open?
Most set up around dusk and stay open until late at night. They close in bad weather and many take one or two days off each week.
